Meeting Topic: Mental Health First Aid
Presenters: Brian Sadler, MS, LPC and Michelle Stromme, MS, LPC
What is Mental Health First Aid? Can individuals be trained and certified in MHFA?
Brian and Michelle will provide an overview of the certification program, how it serves as an additional layer of help, awareness, and resources in our communities and organizations and have some in-person group activities during this presentation.
Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. The opportunity to practice—through role plays, scenarios, and activities—makes it easier to apply these skills in a real-life situation. Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency–the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better and use their strengths to stay well.
Mid-State Technical College is holding a certification class for Mental Health First Aid Certification on March 12, 2024, at their Wisconsin Rapids Campus. Presenting what MHFA is and raising awareness of this training to the Network Exchange for HR Professionals is important as it serves as a resource and training to garner additional, trained individuals in our community and organizations to be a resource to help support those dealing with mental health.
