WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Alexander Field-South Wood County Airport announces it has been awarded a $2.7 million Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) grant to support a comprehensive terminal modernization and renovation project designed to enhance user experience, improve community engagement, and strengthen the airport’s long-term infrastructure.
The project is expected to include:
• Modernized terminal interiors and passenger/crew areas
• Accessibility and ADA-compliant upgrades
• Improved energy efficiency and building systems
• Year round indoor and outdoor gathering and observation areas
• Updated technology and operational improvements
“It is an honor to be the only general aviation airport in the state to have been chosen for this highly competitive grant,” said Jeremy Sickler, airport manager. “The terminal modernization project will help us provide a more welcoming experience for passengers and the community while positioning the airport to better support regional economic development. We hope to leverage this grant to raise additional funding from local sources to establish a feature unlike any other in the state.”
Airport officials noted that the grant reflects continued local, state, and federal confidence in Alexander Field’s role as a critical transportation and economic asset for the region.
“Airports are gateways to opportunity. This funding will help ensure Alexander Field continues to meet the needs of travelers, businesses, and the broader community for years to come,” said Brad Hamilton, Airport Commission chairman.
Planning and design work for the terminal renovation has already begun, with construction to take place in 2027 pending final project approvals.
